The story of Silver coins links back to the Greeks, and they are considered as the oldest mass form of coinage. As in the case of gold coins, the value of silver coins is also determined by factors such as their supply, demand and the number originally minted.

The ancient Persians used silver coins between 612-330 BC. Before 1797, British pennies used to be made out of silver. Privately minted silver coins are known as silver "rounds" and silver "bars". They usually have a set weight of 1 troy ounce of silver and are available in different designs.
